My Bathroom Makeover - The Before:

For years I have had this outdated metallic finish wallpaper in my bathroom.  Somehow I was never really motivated to do anything about it even though I wasn't fond of it.

Not only did I not like it but as you can see this one piece above was applied upside down.  For years no-one noticed -- till one day my daughter who was about two and being potty trained asked why the fish were upside down.

Recently, something moved me to tear it down.  Maybe it was that one corner that seemed to be lifting.

So now the wallpaper is gone but the walls need work before painting. The adhesive needs to be stripped and rough spots need repairing. I bought some spackling and there it sits in my kitchen waiting for me to get to work while here I sit at my computer looking and looking and looking at more and more pictures and ideas.  Did I say this was going to take a while?

The hard part seems to be picking out the right colors to paint the walls and cabinets.  You can see I purchased a new shower curtain to help with colors.  Of course, if you are familiar with my Etsy shop -- you know I am interested in a beach theme.  I've been looking on line -- and looking and looking.  I had fun visiting Houzz.com and Pinterest for ideas. Do you know there is an endless supply of ideas and colors on the internet?  That can be a bad thing.   I found lots of great bathroom photos and pinned them to my "decorating my bathroom" pinterest board.   I tried the Sherwin Williams on-line site and after trying to narrow down my choice I went and purchased a sample of Drizzle SW 6479 - Blue Paint Color - Sherwin-Williams   I determined the color was too dark and planned to pick up one of the lighter shades.  It's Possible Tidewater SW 6477 would be a better choice.

Sherwin Williams Paint Choices

Then just as I thought I had decided, I saw some colors I liked on line at Benjamin Moore Paints.  Maybe I should visit the BM store (or maybe not).  If you are looking for painting ideas - both the Benjamin Moore and the Sherwin Williams sites have lots of pictures and helpful tools to help you choose from their colors.  Pinterest has lots of ideas too.   Just be careful - there are so many choices that it's overwhelming, also when I got to the store I realized some colors that I thought would go -- were really too green toned.
As you can see my tile is a almond/lt peachy tone.  I wish there was money to replace tile but that's not going to happen.  Not sure if I should go with a white, canvas or tan  for the cabinets.

I hope I haven't bored you with all my bathroom design decisions.  Of course, please share with me any ideas or suggestions for colors or paints.  I need all the help I can get.

  1. One nice thing about paint is you can always have a "do over" if you don't like it. I would pull the green tone from the shower curtain. Also One thing I have learned is once I find a color I like on a color card I then go down 2 shades since paint always looks darker on a wall, especially a small space like a bathroom. Have fun with it Judy, I know it will look great when you are done.

  2. Thanks Lorrie, I'm trying to decide whether to go with the very lightest shade which almost looks white because it will look darker once on wall or one shade down. I suppose if I try the lightest -- I can always go the one lighter if I don't like it. I probably shouldn't but I think I am going to check out the Benjamin Moore Store too.

  3. I think a light shade of the green would be lovely also. Good luck, can't wait to see the finished project!

  4. I am going through the same decision process for a larger room! I want to paint it dark but I am so scared. There won't be any doing over if I don't like it! I wish I could see your shower curtain in person.....you could always take it with you to the paint store!

    1. I actually have another shower curtain that I bought that is less busy and a set of towels. I am saving them till it's done. Maybe I'll make that part of my next post. I also have a watercolor print by Kelly Bermudez on Etsy that I just bought a frame for that will go great in the bathroom.

  5. I tend to over analize when I need to paint or decorate so much. I tend not to move forward in fear it will look bad. If you don't like it, you can repaint it again. The lighter green would be nice. Go for it!

  6. Just do it! Go to Home Depot or Lowes and find a (different color) paint you can use on the tile also. You already hate it, so why not?

  7. Have fun with your project, Judy! I'm not surprised you'll have a beach scheme and I'm sure it'll be lovely. The tile can work as a sand color or you can even glaze them with a different color if you want to do that. I hope this doesn't add to your overwhelm, but if you check out the "Seaside Harmony" color scheme you'll see that there's something similar to your tile color and hues from your shower curtain, as well. http://www.behr.com/consumer/inspiration/2014-color-trends

  8. I vote for the Tidewater shade. It's beautiful. I would not paint the tile. It just does not look good and it is hard to find a paint that will adhere to the smooth tile surface, but here is an idea: tile stickers. The etsy shop Bleucoin makes them.
